Yes. In most cases, it’s just a matter of contacting your provider to cancel your current package and arrange the switch. Some providers will even arrange the switch for you!

How to Switch Broadband Provider In 4 Simple Steps

  1. Check Your Eligibility – First, you need to check if you have completed the minimum term of your contract. You can find this information in account settings but, if you’re uncertain, just give your provider a call. If you have not completed this, it is likely you will need to pay an exit fee. This fee will vary depending on your supplier and how long is left on your contract.
  1. Choose a New Broadband Package – Take some time to assess your needs and then search for a broadband package that suits you. Be sure to check upload speeds. Some providers exclusively advertise their packages based on download speeds and fail to mention super-slow upload speeds – this can catch you out!
  1. Contact A New Provider Directly – If your current internet provider uses the Openreach telecoms network – such as BT, EE, Sky or TalkTalk – then your new provider should be able to arrange the transfer for you.
  1. Contact Your Current Provider (if required) – When you’re ready to commit and switch internet provider, it’s good to officially confirm with your existing provider that you have left. Be certain that you have received notification of the contract ending. Your new provider will then provide you with a contract informing you of when your new service is due to start.

How Long Does It Take to Switch Broadband?

The time it takes to switch broadband provider can vary depending on a lot of factors.

Usually, the process will take around two to three weeks. It can take substantially longer if your home requires additional network installation.

The process will be quickened if your new provider uses the same telecoms network as your current one. This is because providers that share networks will rarely require added network work to make the switch

It is worth bearing in mind, however, that switching to a provider that uses the same network could result in you experiencing similar connectivity. This means that if you have connection issues already, you could experience similar issues with the new supplier.
