How does optical fibre work and is it the better connection? – Research with University of Liverpool

This spring we worked with the University of Liverpool to help us answer the reasons why optical fibre is the preferred internet connection compared to traditional copper. Since its invention in the early 1970’s, the use of and demand for optical fibre has grown massively and is the proven solution to infinite bandwidth.

To understand why fibre is the preferred connection and to learn more about the technology, University of Liverpool conducted a report with our team on the ways fibre technology is made and works to better understand its benefits and functionality as an internet solution.

The findings also help to demonstrate that fibre also has better energy performance by using less materials and requiring less space when installed – meaning that optical fibre is also the smarter business choice when considering internet connectivity. Their report discusses what optical fibre is, the principles of its operation and what types of fibre are available. To sum up, optical fibre outperforms copper and is an excellent candidate for telecommunications systems. We’ve highlighted below the benefits of fibre and why it should be the chosen connection for homes and businesses:

  • Larger bandwidth
  • Smaller size & weight
  • Better electrical isolation
  • Better immunity to interface
  • Higher signal security
  • Lower transmission loss, hence less power consumption
  • More flexible and reliable

If you’re looking to change your internet connection and wanting to upgrade to a fibre network, our team offers complete management and support. Contact our team to find out more on 0333 305 7560 or via email

Local councils we work with

We work closely with local councils across the UK. Their digital inclusion teams assist communities that are struggling with their current connectivity.
