Cambois residents receive up to twenty times faster internet connection thanks to FACTCO and Project Gigabit.
More than 100 residents who had previously registered with the government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme in Cambois, Northumberland, have been connected to ultrafast fibre-optic broadband thanks to FACTCO.
Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme
Cambois is the largest completed gigabit voucher project to date in Northumberland. The Department for Digital Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) is investing up to £210m to support rural communities like Cambois.
The money covers the cost of installing new gigabit-capable connections. The scheme is all part of a wider £5bn Project Gigabit investment, the biggest broadband upgrade in the UK’s history. Grants up to £1,500 are available for residents, with vouchers worth £3, 500 available for businesses.
Broadband speeds in Northumberland
The current average broadband speed in Northumberland is just 57 Mbps, but many areas have access to even less than this. The Project Gigabit Voucher Scheme enables registered residents to receive up to 1,000 Mbps. Speeds of this capacity mean residents can download their favourite TV shows in seconds and improve their upload and download speeds up to ten times the current rate. The project has been led by community fibre lead for Northumberland, Janine Docherty.
Cambois resident and local pub owner, Michael Hurbert, highlighted the importance of having faster internet speeds for his business:
“We tried to show some football games when the lockdown was starting to ease up. Our customers were agitated with the blurry screens and constant buffering. The network will make an incredible difference to our lives, our neighbours’ lives and help my business flourish. Thanks to this new scheme, we can’t wait to show the World Cup this winter.”
Councillor Richard Wearmouth, Cabinet Member responsible for iNorthumberland, said:
“iNorthumberland are thrilled that our residents can now access better broadband. Connectivity is so important for both work and leisure, its importance exemplified by the COVID pandemic. I would like to thank FACTCO and Project Gigabit for all their hard work. I’m excited to see more locations benefitting from this new ultrafast broadband in the future.”
