FACTCO Are Supporting Rural Businesses and Homes Using The Rural Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme

Remote areas that struggle with their broadband can now seek help from companies like FACTCO who are able to fund, design, build and maintain full-fibre networks.

Recent reports show that one in ten English and Welsh properties do not have any access to super-fast broadband. With recent focus on connectivity in government and the aim to have full coverage across the UK by 2033, schemes like the Rural Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (RGV) is essential in order to support those hard to reach communities.

Sylvia Pringle, Business and Community Engagement Officer at iNorthumberland, part of Northumberland County Council, spoke about the benefits of the RGV and how it supports those communities most in need:

Connecting rural communities to reliable broadband is what iNorthumberland works hard to achieve. The Rural Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme exists for these communities who need it the most. Full-fibre networks can be an expensive undertaking and urban areas are generally selected first for internet upgrades; leaving rural communities behind. Internet access is essential for a rural community to flourish and have a positive future.”

The scheme, originally known as the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) has recently ended and was a great success. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport who funded the scheme have now switched their focus to supporting the remote areas across the UK – hence the name Rural Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme. Registered suppliers like FACTCO are now working hard to support those rural communities and businesses who desperately need their connectivity upgraded and have already successfully supported rural businesses this year.

The FACTCO team connected Warwick Mill Business Village, using the RGV scheme. Warwick Mill Business Village brings a new kind of business environment to companies based in Carlisle and North Cumbria. Their place that has been created to allow businesses to thrive, now has the connectivity which supports that. We spoke with Emma Skelton, Commercial Manager at Warwick Mill Business Village about their experience with the FACTCO team:

“Having our new network installed during this time has given us the opportunity to focus on how we can improve our business, support our tenants and ensure that our communications will match our tenants’ varied needs for a long time to come. The FACTCO team have been excellent. They have managed to work around the restrictions in place and have provided us with a gigabit capable network and secure public WiFi. This has allowed us to be ready for when business gets back to normal.

FACTCO are working closely with local councils, to see how they can support their constituents who are most in need of new connectivity. Future projects will focus on those vulnerable communities as well as growing rural businesses who will benefit greatly from this support.

We spoke to Lee Murphy, Managing Director at FACTCO about the future and how they plan to work with RGV: “As you can imagine recent events have added to the complexities of connecting areas that the RGV scheme is designed to support. The work we’ve put in during the last few months has enabled us to prepare and understand the needs of these rural communities.

We’ve managed to reach out so some communities who are really struggling with their connectivity. We’ve really noticed that rural connectivity is way behind the urban areas that we have concentrated on in the past. This is good news as we have many projects in the pipeline where businesses and residents are delighted about the support that we can offer them.”
